Emily has grown up at St. Andrew’s United Church and will be travelling to Ecuador this summer. With the support of the congregation’s youth group, Emily is hosting a Soup luncheon on Sunday, January 27 after worship at Deer Park Church to raise funds for her trip. Read more from Emily below.
I am very excited to share with you what I will be up to this summer! I have the opportunity to travel on a ME to WE Immersive Volunteer Trip to Ecuador!
This trip will allow me to practice my Spanish, and more importantly, experience and learn a lot about a different culture in another part of the world.
As a volunteer, I will visit a community that partners with ME to WE. Together with local community members, I will volunteer on a project that helps empower families with the tools to lift themselves from poverty—from a classroom to a clean water system. The projects I’m contributing to are part of ongoing development work, so my trip will have an impact long after I return home!
I will have the ability to connect with community members and experience their daily lives and culture in person, with activities like visiting with an artisans’ group, learning how to make chocolate at a cacao farm, and joining a local family to help harvest produce and collect water. I will learn firsthand about social issues including women’s rights, the impact of income distribution and racial inequality on rural Indigenous communities, deforestation, and access to education and clean water.
Throughout my trip, I’ll take part in activities to help build my leadership skills. I’ll also work with my trip leaders to build an action plan—a blueprint of how I’ll take the inspiration from my trip and use it to make a difference at home on local and global issues.
I am fundraising to pay my way on this Volunteer Trip and hosting the Soup Lunch is one way to help me do so. I would truly love your support! I hope you are able to join me at my fundraiser for some yummy soup!
Thank you for supporting my Me to We Volunteer Trip to Ecuador!
