Earlier this week, Affirming Faith leaders in Calgary came together to speak to local media expressing concerns about the visit of an evangelist from Nigeria. You’ll find below words from Affirming Connections Coordinator Pam Rocker:
This afternoon (Tuesday, September 18), a group of affirming faith leaders in Calgary came together to speak to some media outlets and to show solidarity and support for the LGBTQ2S+ community.
This was in response to the “preacher” from Omega Fire Ministries who is coming to
Calgary from Nigeria. He is in Calgary September 18/19, 2018, to speak at one of his sects.
This person calls for hate and violence against LGBTQ2S+ people.
As a community, many of us have signed petitions, contacted local and national authorities
and politicians, and showed our support for the upholding of Section 319 of the criminal
code which prohibits hate speech. Unfortunately, to our knowledge, this has not been
enforced in this situation thus far. We will continue to be in contact with authorities and
encourage you to do the same if you are able.
As people of faith, it’s important not only to say what we are against but what we are for.
