Last evening we finished the discussion group looking at Darwin, Divinity, and Dance of the Cosmos. If some people want to discuss it some more before I leave at the end of June, I am open to setting up one or more meetings to do that. Now I am starting a new Monday discussion group meeting at 2 pm in the afternoon instead of at 7 pm in the evening. The topic will be troublesome Bible verses.
This discussion group will be looking at passages from the Bible that tend to be troublesome or upsetting or confusing and will meet March 5, 12, 19 and 26. The verse I have chosen for March 5 is Luke 14:26 (“If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.” RSV) It is part of Luke 14:15-33 in which Jesus talks about discipleship.
My hope is that participants will choose verses that have troubled them for the following meetings. These verses can come from anywhere in the Bible. I invite anyone who has been troubled by a verse or story in the Bible to come to this discussion group or, if the time does not work, to ask for another time that will work better.
