Early last week, the four-church Refugee Committee learned the Syrian family of six that it was anticipating would arrive Saturday night. The committee of Scarboro, McDougall, St. Andrew’s and Deer Park United Churches’ representatives went into high-gear. Final items needed were collected. The committee only got access to the apartment rented for the family on Saturday morning.
“The volunteers had only six hours to clean the place, move out things the owner had left, sort through donated kitchen and clothing items, move in furniture and assemble assemble beds” said one of the volunteers, Michael Plumb.
“The family was exhausted from all the travel it has had to do but perked up once we got them to their apartment and they saw how nice it was and how much our volunteers had done,” said Michael.
Thank you to the combined committee, volunteers and the individuals and households from the four congregations and beyond who have made donated needed items and financial gifts towards assisting the family. We will continue to have more updates on the family’s settling in to Calgary.
